After the election on December 7, the Electoral Commission (EC) has officially announced that Faustina Elikplim Akurugu of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been elected as the Member of Parliament-elect for the Dome Kwabenya seat of the Greater Accra Region.
This follows the Commission’s earlier declaration that the election results, which had determined the NDC Candidate winner based on contested results from one polling station, were void.
The announcement comes after a two-week battle between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the NDC, the two main parties, over the contest’s winner.
The NPP has historically held sway over the Dome Kwabenya seat. Prior to the announcement, the EC had first announced a rerun of the Abokobi Women’s Development Center 2 polling station due to the controversy surrounding the polling station’s unresolved result.
However, the EC reversed course and stated that the repeat is not necessary during a press conference on Tuesday, December 31.
It then declared that Faustina Akurugu of the NDC had received 50,967 votes, while Mike Oquaye Jr. of the NPP had received 50,669 votes, winning the seat and the privilege to represent the constituency in Parliament.
The EC will no longer rerun the contested polling station as a result of this declaration.
It clarified that the polling station’s result was recorded on a presidential election training sheet and that its computations and investigations verified that it matched completely with the results of other parties’ election-day records as reported by the returning officer.
