According to Ghanaian musician Okyeame Kwame, three months prior to the general elections of 2024, Alan Kyerematen approached him with an offer to be his running mate.
Okyeame Kwame noted, however, that he turned down the alluring offer due to the various challenges associated with a career in politics.
Potential propaganda, security risks, and the intense public scrutiny that usually accompanies political activity were among his worries.
The musician said in an interview on Joy FM on November 16, 2024, that his choice was partly influenced by his family’s welfare.
I was in Kumasi for a function when he [Alan] approached out. He listed certain requirements for the individual he want to have as his running buddy when I visited him. It was really flattering. They were looking for someone who had made a big impact, and I had 26 years of experience in the music business. Personal aspects like marriage and family were also taken into account.
My kids are teenagers, so I couldn’t do it. I would need to prepare them for at least a year if I [were to enter] partisan politics. I also had to consider security: what if you were the target of misleading propaganda? What if your skeletons were discovered? Had I given my family the tools they needed to handle such pressure? No. And for that reason, I didn’t want to endanger my family,” he clarified.
